Cores
The number of simultaneous processing units that this server can do. Literally the number of things it can do at once. A two-core server can handle a lot of tasks literally twice as fast as a one-core server, though some tasks will make better use of multiple cores than others (processing web pages splits itself fairly ideally across multiple cores though).
Memory
A server will need to reserve a certain amount of memory while it is processing a web page, or incoming email, so the amount of memory you need will be proportional to how busy your server is. When a server hits its memory limit, performance usually degrades sharply.
Storage
The amount of data that your server can store, of which 2-5GB is required for a Linux-based system. The rest is free for your sites, mailboxes and databases.
Spindles
The number of separate physical discs that are dedicated to this hosting. When a server has split your data across lots of discs, it can usually read it faster because each disc can read a chunk of the file simultaneously.
Fast SAS storage
Consumer hard discs are normally based around the simple "SATA" storage standard and most SATA discs run at a slower speed. SAS discs often run faster, and have more advanced features to speed up data transfer to the main system. In short SAS-based systems will perform faster!
External storage
All our servers are fitted with a fixed number of internal discs. However with our premium servers you can purchase external drive shelves to expand their storage capacity to over 100 drives.
Can run Windows?
Our virtual machines can only run Linux-based operating systems, but dedicated servers are also able to run any version of Windows Server 2008.
Can be clustered?
Dedicated servers can be arranged into a cluster using our cluster facilities such as load balancing. Virtual machines currently cannot do this, though they can still assist in a clustered installation with the right planning.
Hot swap drives
A server which supports hot-swap drives can have one or more of its drives replaced without scheduling any down time. For our ordinary dedicated servers (which don't) a 20 minute window of down time must be agreed in order to effect a drive change.
Dual power supplies
Our premium servers can be installed with a second power supply and second power feed to give them resiliency against failure of one power feed, or against a power supply failure. While the electricity in the data centre is generator-backed, the transformers in each server's power supply can sometimes fail and bring the server down. But a server with two power supplies can have the faulty power supply swapped out without bringing it down.
Dual network connections
Our premium servers and virtual machine hosts have two network connections. This means that if a port or cable fails, the server does not lose its internet connection.
