What can you do with a virtual machine?
You have root access, exactly the same as a dedicated server - so you can do anything you like! A 256MB server can handle a large number of web sites, mailboxes or other services. It can run PHP, Java, Ruby on Rails, Perl or other technologies that run on a standard Linux system.
What can't you do?
The main compromise with any virtualised system is that your share of the system's CPU and disc resources isn't constant. So you may find that if one of your applications or sites makes heavy demands, it works fine some of the time, but slows down at others. You may be able to fix this by adding more memory, which is never oversold at Bytemark (some other companies sell you systems with "burstable" memory - we think that's a recipe for very unpredictable performance).
You can run any Linux-based OS on our Virtual Machines, but not any version of Windows Server (you will need a dedicated server for that).

How do Bytemark do it?
Bytemark use the KVM virtualiser which has been a standard part of Linux since 2007. It provides simple virtualisation which our software makes easy to manage, and fits into our business. However the core technology is the best of the free software development model: providing cutting edge system isolation, speed and good value.
We use cutting edge HP Blade Server hardware on top of our high-speed reliable core network for optimum reliability of the whole system.
Easy to use
Even though we give you root access, you don't need to be a Linux wizard to use our hosting. Your server appears as a hard drive, right on your desktop, and you can drag your files online with a sweep of the mouse.
Operating system choices
You can pick from any of the following OS you order your server.
Linux

Windows is not available on Virtual Machines (you will need a dedicated server for that.
