Here's how you can start with our Managed Hosting service. We present an itemised quotation for some medium-demand hosting, wrapping with our excellent support and bespoke application management.
Specification
We are going to assume that the customer has a PHP/MySQL, Rails or other web application that may be open to the public, or more likely is a system for internal use.
To keep the system under our budget of £1500, we are going to run it on a 2000MiB virtual machine. This means that we are running on one system rather than a redundant cluster, but one that benefits from:
- Dual power supplies, hot-swappable drives
- A managed platform (even before adding our application management), so we consider the hardware part of our core infrastructure
- 2 shared CPU cores
Finally by adding Bytemark's application management, the customer knows he will get:
- Common-sense firewalling and system monitoring
- Backups, and a disaster recovery plan we can execute 24/7
- Peace of mind that their setup is being reviewed quarterly, and that Bytemark will advise them if it is suffering

Upgrades/additions
This is definitely the lowest cost managed service that we can manage. If demand increases, there are several angles we might pursue.
Double the RAM
The price increase to 4000MiB RAM would only cost an extra £140 per year, and would be a natural upgrade if demand increased on the application.
More hours
1 hour per month is sufficient for small, simple applications and should include the time spent setting up. A more protracted setup might add a one-off charge of a few hundred pounds, and a buggy or difficult application might need more committed hours per month.
Dedicated server upgrade
If demand continues to increase, it may be that a virtual machine can't handle the load. By way of example, we could upgrade you to a Phenom II X6, a six-core dedicated server, with 8GiB RAM, for an extra £980 per year. Alternatively if the project's budget allows, we can rearchitect the whole system to run on a redundant cluster - see our other example quote for under £10,000 per year.
