Who are Bytemark?
Bytemark Computer Consulting Ltd. started in 2001 as a consulting firm based in York, UK. Its directors are Matthew Bloch and Peter Taphouse—experienced network and software engineers who combined their expertise to build one of the UK’s nerd hosting outfit of choice (as one customer described the company).
Since then it have grown to a team of six people and two dogs . The small team means that Bytemark is able to be constantly aware of its customers’ needs without the burden of excessive management.
As consultants, Peter and Matthew had been offering some customers Virtual Machine hosting solutions without them even knowing, and had found the technology to work far better than previously imagined. As long-time connoisseurs of cheap hosting, and having regular dealings with unhelpful ISPs, they decided that Linux Virtual Machines were the hosting solution that they wish they had years ago.
After trialling the system with some volunteers from September 2002, the service was developed commercially and now provides a cost-effective and flexible hosting platform.
In 2004 Bytemark started to invest heavily in the rack space and server building expertise necessary to provide low cost dedicated servers which continue to prove popular.
In April 2007 Bytemark was one of the first ISPs with the technical expertise to support the Xen hypervisor directly on customers dedicated servers, and remains one of the only ISPs to do so.
In April 2008 Bytemark started offering a wholesale anti-spam and anti-virus solution starting at only 50 pence per domain, and an open source, and uniquely easy-to-use Debian distribution which makes root access easier to handle.
In over five years of business, Bytemark has great contracts with our three data centres and has expanded its network to provide multiple feeds, peering and more redundancy than ever before.
The company philosophy continues to be built by hand – our software, servers and network are completely of our own design and less suppliers means less people to whom we can pass the buck – and more confidence for its customers.
