How fast will my connection go?

The download speed of the Max product will be “up to” 8Mb—the actual speed depends on your premises’ distance from the local telephone exchange and quality of your line. BT only guarantee a small fraction of the maximum 8Mb speed, and will fix the final synchronisation speed after a 10-day “line training” period. I

Do your prices include VAT?

Customers liable to pay VAT (those in the European Union) should add VAT at the UK’s rate of 17.5%.

What happens when I hit my bandwidth quota?

We do not charge you unless you have been warned of the impending charge by email! This will happen automatically, and you will shortly be able to change your warning preferences via our control panel.

What support do you offer?

We offer only diagnostic checks on potentially faulty lines – please print out our ADSL diagnostics page for some tips on diagnosing and fixing faulty lines.

Where’s your “unlimited” service?

We don’t claim to offer an unlimited service because we think such services, as advertised by most ISPs, are unfair. Consistent heavy bandwidth usage could easily incur costs to the ISP of hundreds of pounds per month on an 8Mb line, and no provider is exempt from this economic burden (read Guy Kewney’s comment in The Register; we still agree!).

Therefore “unlimited” as offered by ISPs means one or all of:

  • the service really is unlimited, and the low-usage customers are subsidising the high-usage ones;
  • the service is subject to a “fair usage policy” so the provide may cut off, limit or charge high-usage customers to discourage them.
  • certain ports and services are disallowed by the provider to try to stop people using high-bandwidth applications.

We don’t think customers want any of the above—we make our limits clear, and bill for excess usage so we don’t need to limit the service.
