Backup space overview
If you have a Virtual Machine, or Dedicated Host with Bytemark, you will be able to access some backup space; the amount of space you have varies depending on the plan you have selected (see our prices page for details). This backup space can be used from the inside of our network to back up your Virtual Machine, Dedicated Host or other external machines.
This backup space is guaranteed to be physically separate from your machine, and accessible from outside of it if you so choose. Currently you can access your backup space using Linux NFS or through the rsync protocol. If you’re not sure how to use your backup space effectively we’ve also written a page of ideas and software recommendations.
You should know your backup account’s ID. If you are a virtual machine or dedicated host customer, it will usually coincide with the ID of your virtual machine or dedicated host, i.e. joebloggs.vm.bytemark.co.uk or joebloggs.dh.bytemark.co.uk where joebloggs is the account ID.
The name of the backup server for your machine will always be joebloggs.backup.bytemark.co.uk. You can access the files on your backup server in two ways:
- You can access your backup space over NFS which is simpler,
- or over rsync which is more complicated but more flexible, and allows access from outside our network.
You can also read about some backup ideas which show you how to do common tasks with your backup space.
