What Operating Systems do Bytemark support?
At heart we are a Linux-based hosting company, and our expertise for platforms
we build ourselves is based around Debian .
However we understand that your expertise might not be with Linux, or with
Debian particularly, and we’re glad to support other versions of Linux and Windows servers.
Linux distributions
We support the following Linux distributions on all our hosting products with
continuous testing. Our principle is that we will support these distributions as long as the upstream source still offers security updates for the version concerned.
Once that time is passed, we will generally stop doing any further testing,
which may limit support to older hardware.
Once upstream sources disappear, we will likely remove sources ourselves which
will remove the possiblility of reinstallation for our customers.
These are the systems currently on offer (October 2011)
- Debian : squeeze
- Ubuntu : lucid (LTS), oneiric
- CentOS : 5.7, 6.0
- Symbiosis : our own ‘easy hosting’ solution, based on Debian
A note on Linux kernels
These days our hardware is well supported by distro kernels and we recommend that’s what you should use.
Windows versions
Currently we can install the Standard and Web editions of Windows Server 2008 on any of our dedicated servers but customers will not be able to reinstall it themselves (we don’t charge for reinstalls of Windows though).
Windows is not yet available on Virtual Machines .
