Virtual machine rescue

You can use our console in order to reboot your
machine and access its serial line. This is normally used to fix minor
network or firewall errors when your box would otherwise be inaccessible.

However the serial line can also be used to change your system’s boot
process in an emergency, or when you want to reinstall the operating
system.

Dedicated servers have a network boot enviromnent instead of this
boot option.

How it works

When you reboot your virtual machine from the console shell you
will see a boot menu appear for 10 seconds allowing you to choose between three
boot modes:

Rescue option

If you leave it alone, it will boot normally.

The third option, reimaging, is described here

The rescue option causes the system to boot your system with
init=/bin/sh specified to the kernel, and allows you to perform most
of the rescue operations.

“In five years, I cannot remember any downtime at all. Thank you Bytemark, for providing outstanding product and service. I have recommended you on many occasions and will continue to do so.”
