How to Bytemark

Transferring domains to Bytemark from a Third Party

Domains are sold and managed by “registrars” (eg, Gandi, GoDaddy, Namecheap). If you’ve bought a domain with someone else, you might one day decide to transfer it to Bytemark (huzzah!). There are two different ways to transfer your domain to Bytemark, and it depends on whether or not your domain ends with .uk.

Domains that end with .uk

Each registrar has a “Tag”. For example, the Tag that Bytemark uses is TUCOWS-CA. To transfer your domain to Bytemark, you can set the Tag for your domain to TUCOWS-CA using the following instructions:

  1. Contact us and let us know you want to transfer a .uk domain to us. We’ll set things up here to make sure it will appear in your Bytemark Panel. Note that you will need an account to do this.
  2. Contact your existing registrar, and follow their process to provide Bytemarks “Tag” for the domain - “TUCOWS-CA”. At Bytemark, we use Tucows (like many others) to provide our domain services.
  3. Within 24 hours, the domain will transfer from the old registrar to Bytemark.
  4. To check the status, you can use the Nominet WHOIS service - look for the “Registrar” field - but if you’re unsure of the state of the transfer, then you will likely need to contact your for assistance.
  5. Within 24 hours of the transfer completing, the domain should appear in your Bytemark Panel under the “Domains” menu, and you can update any information for it there.

Domains not ending with .uk

This typically involves verification by email, and providing a “Domain Auth Code” (sometimes known as an “EPP” key), as per these instructions:

  1. Contact your current domain host, and ensure the domain is unlocked, and both the Organization and Admin contacts are correct and you can receive mail on them.
  2. Request the “Domain Auth Code” or “EPP Code” from your current registrar. This is your proof of domain ownership, and you will need this later.
  3. Contact us and let us know you want to transfer a domain to us. You shouldn’t typically need to send the Domain Auth Code to us.
  4. Once we have initiated the transfer, the “Organization” and/or “Admin” email addresses you specified should receive an email requesting to confirm. Be sure to check spam folders for the mail.
  5. Read the instructions carefully! You will likely be sent to a web form which requests confirmation and the Domain Auth Code from earlier.
  6. Ensure that the “Business Name” listed on the page is “Bytemark Hosting” and the other information looks correct.
  7. Once the form has been completed, there will be a few more emails confirming the change of registrar, and the domain will transfer from the old registrar to Bytemark.
  8. To check the status of the transfer, you can use any WHOIS service which as https://who.is - look for the “Registrar” field - but if you’re unsure as the the state of the transfer you can contact Bytemark support.
  9. Within 24 hours of the transfer completing, the domain should appear in your Bytemark Panel under the “Domains” menu, and you can update any information for it there.

Important things to note for all domains

  • DNS ‘Hosting’ (where any DNS records are served from) is separate from the selection of registrar, and they don’t need to be the same company. There’s nothing at all stopping you from having your DNS hosted by Bytemark, while the domain is with a different registrar, or vice versa.
  • When moving a domain to Bytemark, it will not change the authoritative DNS servers being used by that domain - they will stay as whatever they were when the domain was transferred, but you may want to ensure the losing registrar will not remove your DNS hosting before you transfer the domain away.
  • In order to transfer a domain, it has to be “live”, so domains which have expired cannot be transferred to another registrar, and they will need to be renewed or returned to normal status first.
